A month after launch, shifting gears
Fewer updates, more context and original reporting
I’ve learned a lot in the month since I launched this newsletter, and it’s made me rethink how to best fulfill The Blanket’s mission of covering Colorado’s biggest challenges through a solutions and accountability lens.
To do that better, I plan to move away from daily updates and toward deeper, original reporting that provides more context and understanding.
My decision to start this newsletter and the related social media accounts coincidentally lined up with the closing months of Colorado’s legislative session, and over the past few weeks I’ve spent a lot of time following the progress of various bills. That helped me learn more about how the political process works here, and it improved my understanding of what are the top issues on the minds of politicians, business leaders, activists and voters here in Colorado.
It also helped me get more familiar with the media landscape and realize that there are a lot of newsletters offering daily updates not unlike the ones I’ve been sending out here. Far fewer dive deep into the history and context of the issues facing our state and explain them from the bottom up. So that’s what I want to focus on moving forward.
I’ll also continue building my graphic design and video editing skills, and experimenting with different formats on social media. I’ve gotten good engagement on some of the videos I’ve made – especially considering I’m starting from absolute zero.
I’ve done high-volume, fast-paced news coverage before. But it’s not my passion and it’s not my strong suit – and I don’t think it’s what’s missing from the current news landscape in Colorado. I’m hoping this pivot will move The Blanket in a positive direction.
